30 Second Reviews: She & Him Make More Giddy Music

ON CD/iTunes:
She & Him Vol. 2 is just as endearing, sweet and frothy as the first edition. She (Zooey Deschnael) & Him (M. Ward) bring about another collection of folky, charming tunes that will make any rainy day feel like sunshine. Download this: Gonna Get Along Without You Now, Sugar Town and their latest single, In the Sun.

ON TV:

Damages' first season was one of the most compelling and addictive debut seasons of any TV drama I've ever seen. Unfortunately, the second season was nothing in comparison... The current season marks the 3rd for the Glenn Close vehicle and luckily, we're right back in action with episodes and plot-lines that leave you wanting more week after week. Still not as fantastic as season 1, but remaining one of TV's brightest dramas.
My Grade: A-

RuPaul's Drag Race is one of the best new competition shows on TV! What a colorful, inspiring and innovative idea. I don't mind catty TV drama as long as there is an art form attached and Ru and Co. really prove that drag is an art!

Sherlock Holmes

Unfortunately what's supposed to come across as so damn funny is lost in translation and what should keep us on the edge of our seat will actually lull you to sleep if you're too comfortable.

Seyfried Goes from Mean Girl to Call Girl

Film Review: CHLOE
starring Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson
directed by Atom Egoyan

Little Amanda Seyfried has come along way from Karen, the girl who has "ESPN or something" in Mean Girls because her boobs could tell when it's raining. Well her boobs are the center of attention all over again in Egoyan's lesbian twist on Fatal Attraction. Filled with sultry images and a very grown, mature, provocative performance from Seyfried, Chloe certainly has enough steam to keep its audience intrigued. Moore, who as usual, can do no wrong, plays a woman suspicious of her husband's fidelity. She hires Chloe, a high-class call girl to seduce him and see if he bites the apple. The build-up to the final act and the film's twist is filled with a lot of great detail, sumptuous cinematography and stand-out performances by these two dramatically different actresses. The flaws, however, come into play with a lesbian sex scene that seems out of character and simply thrown in to titillate. It comes into play as a very WTF moment and then the rest of the film seems unsure of itself. This is another one of those movies this year where the big reveal is questionable, like in Shutter Island or Remember Me. In a character study like Chloe, I think it would've been wiser to make more subtle moves instead of trying to pull a fast one on the audience. The same can be said for all of these movies, but Chloe has an upper hand simply because of how polished and elegant it is.

MOMENT OF THE WEEK

"MARIAH CAREY IS A NO GOOD HUSSY!" exclaims an angry housewife on Thursday's episode of The Marriage Ref. Besides having issues with her husband keeping a Harley in the family's living room, this woman also says her husband's infatuation with the bedazzled superstar causes strain on their marriage. I'm not sure if it was the way this white trash woman was comparing herself to Mariah (in her eyes, there's NO comparison as she exclaims in her own right, "what does he want with Mariah Carey when he has me?") or just the fact that I think Mariah is a no-good hussy, that makes for this to be the moment of the week.

The Marriage Ref
airs Thursdays at 10pm on NBC.

X-Tina Reveals Devilish Cover Art for New Single

Can't wait to hear some new music from X-Tina. Hire a babysitter and bring back that nasty naughty girl we love! The new album better be hot and full of fun upbeat songs. No-one wants to hear about you at the chapel and being head over heels in love with your hubby and new baby! There's lots of buzz about X-Tina's upcoming album Bionic and based on what I'm hearing and judging from the cover art, I think Dirrty X-Tina is headed back to give the Lady a run for her Gaga! Watch out Britney! Your main competitor is ready for her comeback and you know she don't plan on lyp-synching for her life!

STAR SPOTLIGHT: JENNIFER ANISTON

Instead of going into a list of reasons as to why Jen-An's latest The Bounty Hunter is so crappy (a lot of it can be blamed on her skeezy co-star), I decided to do a run-through of her film career and remember some of her more finer moments. While her latest falls into the less entertaining category with the dislikes of Rumor Has It and Management, Aniston actually has plenty of triumphs on my grade sheet. No matter what, she remains one of my favorite leading ladies and I'm excited for The Switch (click here for the trailer) and her other upcoming projects.

30 Second Reviews: Bullock's Oscar Performance Hits DVD, Outshining Anything Else this Week

IN THEATERS:

Shutter Island
is absurd and whackadoodle. Despite some fascinating imagery, I didn't find it one bit suspenseful or creepy and this so-called "shocking twist" was not all that surprising or clever. I left feeling like I hated it, but then thought it about it a little more and decided it didn't suck that bad... it's just not all that good either.

Edward Cullen worth Remembering as a Different Character?

Film Review: REMEMBER ME
starring Robert Pattinson, Emilie de Ravin, Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Lena Olin, Ruby Jerins
directed by Alan Coulter

When the whole wide world is ROBSESSED with you, it's actually not the easiest thing in Hollywood to prove yourself as a good actor. We see it everyday - just because someone is popular, doesn't mean they are all that talented. Plenty of young stars get over-publicized by new age technology, kick-ass publicists and an entirely different media circus than when I was growing up. Since Twilight debuted and became the phenomenon it is, Robert Pattinson has been one of the most googled, stalked, magazine-selling piece of pop culture history, but how much depth does the character of Edward Cullen really have? Sure, he recites the lines well, but at the end of the day, the decision to cast him in that role is mainly physical. Remember Me is Pattinson's first major role outside of the vampire saga and it has become yet another staple of controversy for the young star. In this romantic NYC drama, Pattinson plays a troubled young man who falls for Lost star Emilie de Ravin. The love story unfolds in a matter that is sweet and entertaining despite it being one of those "Boy going after the girl as part of a bet and let's hope she doesn't find out since I really fell for her now" scenarios. The film's main focus are on Pattinson's relationship with her and his estranged father (Brosnan). While I didn't find any of this all that groundbreaking, I must say I was completely swept up in these characters, who are drawn quite well and even more noteworthy - portrayed quite exceptionally. I've never really seen what the big deal is and am the last person to be Robsessed. Mr. Pattinson proves himself as quite versatile, sincere and definitely memorable in this film. I loved all of the performances of the supporting cast as well, especially Pierce Brosnan, who really took me by surprise. Now at this point I'm sure you've heard all the chatter about this controversial ending... don't worry, I don't spoil anything in my reviews. To be honest, I'm on the fence with the way the story decides to conclude and this "shocking" twist that plays out. I can see where many audiences are going to be moved and never forget Remember Me. And I can also see how it's just sort of mellow-dramatic and nonsensical to throw the audience for a loop this way at the last minute as if it's some sort of horror film and you just found out the villain is not who you thought it would be. I guess I just didn't really get what the filmmakers were trying to say with the piece once this all took place. It seemed more like it was thrown in for shock-value and just seemed out of place, like shoes that don't go with the rest of the outfit. However, I do not understand why Remember Me is being hailed as one of the worst films so far this year. Despite the mixed opinion on this shocking finale, there isn't really much else at flaw here and I think critics are being way too hard on it. I think the average movie-goer is going to be moved by the ending decision and for me, I'll remember these performances.

Queen of the Indies is Back!

Film Review: HAPPY TEARS
starring Parker Posey, Demi Moore, Rip Torn, Ellen Barkin, Christian Camargo
directed by Michael Lichtenstein

I remember when this was shooting in Philly (although you won't recognize any surroundings while watching) and at least five or six of my friends met or had Parker sightings. It drove me nuts!! Parker Posey, nicknamed Queen of the Indies, is the actor that I link to the time in my life that I discovered and fell in love with independent filmmaking. While she may pop up here and there in films like Superman Returns or Scream 3 (which she is brilliant in) the true nature of her gift is exposed when she stars in what she was meant to tackle - characters that are multi-dimensional and reflect real people. The independent spirit returns with this film, which I have been anxiously awaiting to be released. Posey and Moore play sisters who have their own very different, very twisted lives on opposite coasts and are forced to come together and make decisions about who is going to take care of their ailing father (Torn). The reunion of having everyone together under the same roof allows for a plethora of lunacy and unexpected content that you can only find in an indie movie. Unfortunately, for me, the big picture didn't lead up to all the hype I built up for myself. I loved the two leads together and think Moore was perfect to play opposite Posey, especially because she's an unlikely choice. In fact, all of the performances are great, but the characters they play and the project as a whole all feel under-developed. I didn't like the last act of the film very much, in fact, at this point I can't even really remember how it wrapped up. The first half of the film has a lot of laughs and entertaining scenes, but I was hoping I'd love this so much I'd be crying some happy tears of my own! At the end of the day, can Parker Posey really do wrong? Check out the link in this blurb for a pretty cool article reflecting Posey and how indie film has changed.

30 Second Reviews: Eat Your Heart Out Anna Wintour

ON DVD:

The September Issue is your inside look at Vogue magazine and a more intimate introduction to fashion's most respected she-devil Anna Wintour. While her success may be fascinating and admirable, she really isn't all that interesting.
My Grade: C+

Where the Wild Things Are is bittersweet, yet creepy. Spike Jonze's adaptation of the children's book is, like most of his work, unique and out of this world. However, my expectations were a little higher even though I've never even read the book. Great soundtrack featuring Karen-O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

Everybody's Fine.
Great. If they're so fine then we don't need to watch a movie about them. You'll pity Robert DeNiro in this film and be glad to see his kids (Sam Rockwell, Drew Barrymore and Kate Beckinsale) but the mellow-dramatics will bore you.

Up in the Air is another job well done for director Jason Reitman (Juno), shining actors Clooney, Vera Farmiga and a very impressive Anna Kendrick. A great script filled with interesting, complex characters performed by highly gifted talent.

Girl on Girl Gaga: Lady Adds Another Short Film to Music Video Archive

The much anticipated Lady Gaga/Beyonce "Telephone" video premiered last night. Famed music video director Jonas Akerlund (who also directed Gaga's "Paparazzi") helps bring out more of that special kinda crazy we can always expect from the Princess of Pop. I loved the Grindhouse themed girl on girl action and although I'm not Gaga for Gaga the way most of the gays are, I do think when it comes to music videos she is the most visionary of any working artist in the industry. Her videos are more than just a song being cut to match glammed-up images. There is so much thought and design behind each video and I LOVE when music videos take on the form of a short film. I do believe Gaga is living, breathing, walking art and this video is another perfect celebration of her creative genius. You can click the title of this blurb to watch the uncut version of "Telephone", which is on Gaga's album, The Fame Monster.

Burton's "Alice" is Trippy & Dazzling - but is 3D Diminishing Storytelling?

Film Review: ALICE IN WONDERLAND
starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman
directed by Tim Burton

3D is all the rage these days and studios are turning to the most cutting edge technology and embracing the fad in efforts to try and bank themselves the next Avatar. While most movie-watchers don't really focus on the plot of a project when they cough up the cash to be visually dazzled, a lot of people who do care are debating whether or not anyone is paying much attention to telling a good story when they know the 3D appeal is what is going to drive the consumer. Personally, I sit somewhere in the middle. I adored Avatar because I was not only wide-eyed with excitement but very enthralled in the writing and storytelling. But I've also gone to see a not-so plot-driven piece like My Bloody Valentine, just to be entertained. Burton's adaptation of one of our most popular pieces of fiction is going to live up to its hype when it comes to glittering effects, vivacious colors and stellar production value. When it comes to storytelling, the film is lacking, adding to the theory that when there's plenty of eye candy - you can slack off with the unfolding of plot and attention to detail. I suppose I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't swept up in the fairy tale of Alice and am a bit harsher with my critique for the fact that this is a story that's been translated repeatedly. It's a classic story that we know and love, so that should've been the easy part! Will the visuals distract you from the way Burton decided to unveil the series of events? Of course. Is it worth checking out in the theater in 3D? Of course. You'll have a bunch of fun, watch Johnny Depp do what he does so often I can barely distinguish whether he's being Jack Sparrow or Sweeney Todd or Willy Wonka or the Mad Hatter... and you will leave the theater satisfied. Helena, on the other hand, is exceptionally fantastic as the Queen of Hearts. As a critic, I wanted more. As an audience member, I was satisfied and definitely thought it was a fun experience.

How Can So Much Ugliness be so Precious?

DVD Review: PRECIOUS (Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire)
starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sherri Shepherd
directed by Lee Daniels

Some, most people even, go to the movies to escape their reality. They want to be entertained, for the most part, by something mindless and easy to watch whether it's a romantic comedy or a cheesy horror flick. I don't care if a movie makes me feel uncomfortable, sick to my stomach or horribly sad, as long as it makes me FEEL. A film does it's job well enough for me if it makes me think or feel any type of intense emotion and this is the perfect example of a movie that may be tough to sit through, but is completely rewarding when the credits roll at the end. Think of it like spin class - you go in and you're like UGH! I do NOT feel like being here, but when the class ends you feel so great that you went through the agony!! It's rare that a movie like this even comes along. A movie that is so gritty and raw and stays with you forever. It's a gem to find filmmaking this powerful, and Mr. Lee Daniels has executed Precious without flaw, earning him a spot on my "I can't wait to see what he does next" list. Despite some of the ugliest and most disturbing images one has to stomach, there is so much beauty in this film. As an audience member, the most precious gift you can witness are the performances that stay with you long after the movie ends. Mo'Nique is, without question, worthy of every single trophy that she took home this Awards season. Her performance is simply unforgettable and you will marvel at how truly gifted she is. While the raunchy stand-up comic's role as the worst mother imaginable is most of what gets discussed when people reflect, she is hardly the only actor worth celebrating. Newcomer Sidibe is very special in the lead role and you are forced to question how someone, so different from her character, making her film debut, can even channel such a performance. I loved Patton, all of the girls in Precious' class (especially little miss fluorescent beige!) and even Mariah really impressed me. I'm sure a lot of you are thinking Precious is something you can live without seeing, but I feel humbled and appreciative that I was moved by an felt the things I felt watching. It's not up to me to tell you the "message" or what you should take from it should you choose to give it a go. Great movies make each viewer leave with something unique, and for me Precious really lives up to its name.

Cameron's 'Box' Not Nearly as Intriguing as her Vagina

DVD Review: THE BOX
starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella, Celia Weston
directed by Richard Kelly

This is one of those movies that is supposed to make you ask questions like, "What would you do?", but instead I just kept thinking, this would be really interesting if it were a documentary on Cameron Diaz's vagina. Yes, her box is much more appealing subject matter to me than this remarkably bad excuse for a thriller. Other questions I have include, "How did this project get a greenlight?" They say you can make a bad movie with a good screenplay but you can't make a good movie with a bad screenplay. Did anyone read this garbage before they agreed to make/star in it? From the moment it begins, there are multiple reasons to hate this movie. It SCREAMS Direct to DVD or even bad Sunday night movie on CBS from the 70s. I don't know who to blame for Diaz and Marsden's dreadful performances but the only reason to spend $1.07 renting this from Redbox is so you can make fun of it.

Does SuperSized Cast Make for Memorable Valentine's Day??

Film Review: VALENTINE'S DAY
starring Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel, Queen Latifah, Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautnery, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Anne Hathaway, Topher Grace, Shirley MacLaine, Hector Elizondo, George Lopez, Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper, Kathy Bates
directed by Garry Marshall

I wanted to see this movie for the same reason anyone else would - the killer cast! Who ISN'T in this movie? Well, if we're being literal, a lot of my favorites aren't, but still... there's enough eye candy here to give you a cavity just as fast as that box of chocolates your significant other gotcha. Just like any assorted box of candy, the cast has delicious favorites that really stand out and then the ones you skip over or offer to a friend. Scene stealers amongst the massive ensemble include a hilarious Garner, Biel, and even Kutcher (who much of the film follows) in his most endearing and appealing role to date. I also have to give props to MacLaine, Hathaway, Grace and both Roberts. Then there are the not so tasty casting choices that not only lose merit because everyone else is so good, but also manage to bring down the quality of the film. Alba, Foxx, McDreamy & McSteamy and the Taylors all contribute to lackluster plot lines and performances, some of which could've been entirely eliminated. I stand by my "no spoilers" style of reviewing, so I'll just say the "gay" plot is ridiculous! Thanks for thinking of us and trying though!! Overall, the stars that shine save the day and this is one Valentine's Day you'll always remember because of them. It really is quite charming, it just runs a little too long because of some over-written plots and characters.

Hines' Directorial Debut Celebrates Late Adrienne Shelly

DVD Review: SERIOUS MOONLIGHT
starring Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell, Justin Long
directed by Cheryl Hines

I thought the Adrienne Shelly tragedy was absolutely heartbreaking. I loved Waitress and thought Shelly was someone who had a promising future as a screenwriter and filmmaker. This film is an "in memory of" dedication to Shelly, as her final script is brought to life by producer husband Andy Ostroy and one of Shelly's close friends, actress Cheryl Hines, making her directorial debut. I almost feel like I don't want to say anything negative about the project just because I adore that it was made. There are some giggles to be found and I always think it's interesting when a format resembles a play but is actually a film - like Tape or all of Neil LaBute's movies. However, to achieve dramatics and suspense with this type of presentation, you've got to have dialogue prove itself as killer action, and here the only thing that saves the day is the fact that it's a tribute to miss Adrienne.

Bana's Butt is Highlight of Time Travel

DVD REVIEW: The Time Traveler's Wife
starring Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams, Ron Livingston
directed by Roberts Schwentke

Amidst a backdrop of pretty colors, likable leads Bana & McAdams bring the celebrated novel of the same name to life.  Although they are probably as confused as the audience, they do a great job at portraying the characters and distracting us from that "WTF is going on" mantra which is felt from start to finish.  I gotta say, while it's not the worst movie, the most enjoyable perk for me was how often you got to see Bana's backside.  What a great ass he's got!  I suppose the concept and romantic angles are supposed to bring on a sense of magic, but for the most part there's nothing particularly exciting going on here.  A more convincing "my time-traveling partner puts a strain on our relationship" movie is 2000's Happy Accidents starring Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio.

It's a beautiful translation to observe what his creative mind can produce for the film world. Ford presents a directorial debut that is as eloquent and polished as a Gucci suit. Featuring the performance of the year (and his career) from Colin Firth, flawless cinematography and a Vogue-esque combo of fashion and filmmaking at its finest, this uniquely crafted project ranks high amongst the year's best. Julianne Moore is brilliant, as usual, co-starring alongside beauties like Matthew Goode and newcomer Nicholas Hoult, who is shockingly more than just a pretty face.

I am new to Blogger even though Blogger says I've been a member since October 2008. I guess that means it has taken me well over two years to figure out how to use this thing. I guess you could say I'm a typewriter type of writer.

Anyway, I did used to do a lot of blogging on MySpace (when people used it) and always had a lot of views and great feedback, so I thought I'd give this another go. Let's see if I can keep up with all you cool kids!

BTW, I'm 27, even though it sounds like this test blog was written by one of your grandparents.
